Memorandum of Understanding with the City of Sarajevo

On June 6, the Auschwitz Institute for the Prevention of Genocide and Mass Atrocities (AIPG) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the City of Sarajevo. This MOU establishes a collaborative framework between the two institutional partners, focusing on developing joint activities and projects centered around education, transitional justice, memorialization, and other pertinent themes associated with preventing genocide and other mass atrocities. Dr. Gabriela Ghindea, AIPG's Director of Mediterranean Basin Programs, joined Dr. Benjamina Karić, Mayor of Sarajevo, for a signing ceremony held at the City Hall to officially announce this significant alliance.

During the visit to Sarajevo City Hall (Vijećnica), AIPG’s delegation also had the opportunity to explore the permanent exhibition at the Information Centre on the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY). Housed on the ground floor of the building, the Center preserves an extraordinary archive of evidence, including documents, photos, and testimonies from the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina (1992- 1995). This collection is an invaluable resource for education, remembrance, justice, and prevention efforts.

Dr. Gabriela Ghindea remarked on her satisfaction with the signing of the agreement:

“We are honored and delighted to have entered this partnership in education with the City of Sarajevo and are looking forward to filling the framework of our MOU with meaningful joint projects.
I believe that Vijećnica's "power of place" as a symbol of a cosmopolitan and resilient Sarajevo, as well as ICTY Informational Centre's crucial work are sources of inspiration and valuable resources for manifold initiatives aiming to prevent further atrocities.”

Dr. Gabriela Ghindea remarked on her satisfaction with the signing of the agreement:
